His Holiness Dalai  Lama – Solitary Yamantaka Initiation Preliminary Rites

Yamantaka is the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, the practice of which is a strong antidote to the removal of ignorance, the root cause of all delusions. An initiation is sometimes called an empowerment and is the is the gateway to the practice of Tantra, also known as Mantra or Vajrayana.  Yamantaka belongs to the class of Highest Yoga Tantra.

We are pleased to announce that His Holiness Dalai Lama will confer the Yamantaka Initiation in Long Beach on April 21-22, 2012.

尊者 達賴喇嘛【大威德金剛灌頂法會】 Solitary Yamantaka InitiationPreliminary Rites

大威德金剛是忿怒相文殊菩薩，一般而言, 至尊文殊菩薩被認為是諸佛之父，諸佛之母，同時也是 諸佛之子。文殊菩薩之所以現大威德金剛忿怒相，是因為修行者在修行的初期階段，他的慧根，福德資糧，精進等因素，都還十分薄弱，處於最不利和最不順心狀態，才現忿怒相以協助修行者度過難關。置身此階段的修行者，只要碰到一點點阻礙，就能造成莫大傷害。修忿怒相大威德金剛法的特別意義，在於提升智慧以通達空相。避免遭受內在與外在的修行障礙。

Shantideva was an 8th-century Indian Buddhist scholar at Nalanda University and an adherent of the Madhyamaka philosophy of Nagarjuna.  Shantideva is particularly renowned as the author of A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way Of Life

Starting February 26, every Sunday, Rinpoche will be giving a teaching on Shantideva’s A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way Of Life.

【入菩薩行論】

仁波切於二月二十六曰己開始，每週日教授 寂天菩薩造的『入菩薩行論』，此論文詞簡潔，意義深廣，仁波切深入淺出，完整闡釋豐富的內涵，實為難值，敬請大家把握學習。

寂天(Shantideva）論師，音譯為善地嘚瓦，八世紀初，古印度那爛陀寺著名佛教修行者，他在那爛陀寺居住期間，  韜光養晦，內勤修學。一面在文殊本尊前聽受教法，一面精修禪定， 並編著《學處集要》 (略稱學集)和《一切經集要》 (略稱經集) 等精深的論典。但是在日常行事上，除了飲食、睡眠、大小便三件事以外，其他的事一概不知。因此大家都不喜歡他，僧眾爲了找個正當的理由驅逐他，就召開一次誦經大會中，要求每位出家人在會上背誦所學的經典。當日，輪到寂天背誦時，僧眾爲了 羞辱他故意築起高座，請他到上面背誦。沒想到，寂天很自信地，出口成章，流利地背出了大家沒聽過的『入菩薩行論』。當他背到 『智慧品』 第34頌 『若實無實法，皆不住心前，彼時無他相，無緣最寂滅』 時，身體突然騰空而起，漸昇漸高，終於不見身影，而誦經之聲依舊綿綿不絕，直到誦完 『入菩薩行』 為止。或許是因為身份曝光以後，寂天覺得不宜久留，便離開了那爛陀寺，到南印度吉祥功德城，從此以後，就雲逰四方，隨緣度化去了。

寂天的『入菩薩行論』，以發心、六度、迴向為次第。屬中觀應成派，為中觀派晚期極具開創性的思想家。著有《入菩薩行論》、《學處集要》、《一切經集要》流傳於世。他同時精通密法，是一位密宗的大成就者。為八十四大成就者之一。寂天继承了月稱中觀應成派的傳統，但是他在某種程度上也採纳了清辨論師的觀點，融合了中觀自續派與應成派兩者，使他成為後期中觀派重要的代表人物。他思想的最大特點，就是以簡攝繁，以及見行相應二點。

1.Zilkar Rinpoche’s Birthday Celebration

On Friday, February 17th, Lamrim Center will be hosting a “Long-Life Puja” to celeberate Zilkar Rinpoche’s birthday. This event is an opportunity for us to show our deepest gratitude to our most kind and precious teacher Venerable Zilkar Rinpoche, who with his compassion, wisdom, and patience, continues to tirelessly guide us through the ocean of samsara. The puja will be dedicated to Zilkar Rinpoche’s health, long-life, and supplication for Rinpoche to turn the wheel of Dharma extensively.

2. Lama Tsong Khapa and The Great Prayer Festival

As we finish celebrating the Chinese New Year, the Tibetan New Year approaches. A special festival named The Great Prayer Festival takes place during this period of time.

The Great Prayer Festival was established by the Great Saint Lama Tsong in 1409. When the first Great Prayer Festival was held in Lhasa. He invited all the people of Tibet to a two-week-long festival of prayer, auspicious rituals, teachings, and celebrations, from the first new moon until the full moon of the lunar Tibetan New Year.

That time of the year was chosen because Lama Tsong Khapa firmly believed in the life story of the founder Guru Shakyamuni Buddha told in the Indian Buddhist Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish called “Overcoming the Six Teachers: “Buddha was challenged by six rival teachers to a contest of miraculous performances. For many years, Buddha evaded their challenges, letting people believe that he was afraid of their magical powers, losing his royal patrons, and causing doubts and worries to grow among the people.

Finally, in the city of Shravasti, Buddha accepted the challenge and stood before a huge assembly of people from the entire central north Indian area. He proceeded to perform miracle after miracle during the first fortnight of the lunar New Year. The rival teachers were eclipsed almost immediately, as Buddha produced spectacular manifestations. He threw down a toothpick and grew a giant wish-granting gem tree. He rinsed his mouth with scented water, and celestial lakes with divine ducks and jewel lotuses appeared. He concentrated and emitted rays of light, and hosts of Buddhas, bodhisattvas and gods filled the skies.

The purpose of the Great Prayer Festival is to pray for the long life of all the holy Gurus of all traditions, for the survival and spreading of the Dharma in the minds of all sentient beings, and for world peace.

It has been said that during that first Great Prayer Festival in 1409, people who gathered in Lhasa had visions of Buddhas and divine beings filling the sky. Everyone spent the whole time as if on a spiritual retreat, praying, studying, making offerings, learning, and debating meaningful philosophical topics. The noble tradition is preserved and is practiced in the same way to this day in most of the Gelug monasteries.

Just like in the old days, we can do the same now by utilizing this precious time period to contemplate on the great deeds of Lama Tsongkhapa, make great aspirations, recite scriptures, and make offerings to accumulate great merits.

2. 憶念 宗喀巴大師重興供養祈願大法會

依據【賢愚經】降六師品說,  釋迦牟尼佛，昔日從正月初初一到十五元宵, 於舍衛國較試場大顯神通，降伏六種邪魔外道師，及其迷冥之徒,摧毀魔旌，建樹正法幢。世尊化身遍滿梵天、四天王天、色究竟天，乃至三千大千世界。佛身個個威嚴高顯，放大光明，與大眾圍繞說法。由於如來的善巧神變，因而拔濟無量眾生，遠離滋生罪惡之不善地。未具善根的人，讓他們種下善根；已具善根的人，讓他們倍加增長；善根未成熟的人，讓他們儘快成熟；善根已成熟的人，全令他們得到解脫。更有眾生，因而發大菩提心，得不退轉地；有的眾生，因而證得羅漢果。這就是所謂的<如來現大神變之法會>。

過去印度諸大法王， 每遇此勝期，都廣設無量上妙供品，供養三寶，誦經發願，福施眾生。後來佛法初傳西藏時，西藏諸大善知識仍能仿照 印度，如法興大供養。如今正值末世，佛法陵夷， 供養法會已經慢慢隱沒了。聖宗喀巴大師為酬宿願，上爲聖教永住，法輪常轉，下令眾生集福，獲澤無盡，因而發廣大心，籌畫重興大神變之供養法會。 值此殊勝期間，當憶念 世尊與 宗大師之功德及恩德， 願同修們一同發願，更加努力精進。

3. 登記參加 大威德金剛灌頂法會

大威德金剛是忿怒相文殊菩薩. 一般而言, 至尊文殊菩薩被認為是諸佛之父, 諸佛之母,同時也是 諸佛之子.文殊菩薩之所以現大威德金剛忿怒相,是因為修行者在修行的初期階段,他的慧根,福德資糧,精進等因素,都還十分薄弱,處於最不利和最不順心狀態,才現忿怒相以協助修行者度過難關. 置身此階段的修行者,只要碰到一點點阻礙,就能造成莫大傷害.修忿怒相大威德金剛法的特別意義,在於提升智慧以通達空相,避免遭受內在與外在的修行障礙. 因此,修大威德金剛法很重要。

Special Events

Lunar New Year is on January 23 this year. To bring in the New Year, Lamrim Center will hold two special ceremonies on Sunday, January 22. This is an opportunity for purification and accumulation of merits.

1) Heart Sutra: Purification Ceremony.

The Heart Sutra is a presentation of profound wisdom on the nature of emptiness and selflessness. Understanding of emptiness leads to a view of reality and to a deep and compassionate understanding. Let us start the New Year off by purifying our negativities from the past year.

Everyone is welcome to bring offering items. Please make sure you take them with you at the end of the ceremony. If you wish to make dedications for the living or deceased family and friends, please notify us through email lrcenter2009@gmail.com before January 22^nd .

2) Green Tara Sadhana

Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas. Each of the Twenty-one Taras is a manifestation of the principal Tara, Green Tara. When we are young, we turn to our worldly mother for help. She protects us from dangers, provides us with our worldly needs, and guides us in our learning and personal development. In the same way, during our spiritual growth we turn to our Holy Mother, Tara, for refuge. She protects us from all internal and external dangers, she provides us with all the necessary conditions for our spiritual training, and she guides us and inspires us with her blessings as we progress along the spiritual path. In the past, the great Indian masters such as Nagarjuna, Atisha and more have practiced the Green Tara and received great blessings and made great accomplishments in their Dharma  practice.

If we recite 21 Tara Praises and the Green Tara Mantra, we’ll receive inconceivable benefits. These praises are very powerful because they are Sutra, the actual words of Buddha. We will also take this time to give our sincere New Year Greeting to our teacher.
